Mountain Rescue Doctor or The Ultimate New York Body Plan

Mountain Rescue Doctor: Wilderness Medicine in the Extremes of Nature

Author: Christopher Van Tilburg

Christopher Van Tilburg, MD is an emergency room physician, ski patrol doctor, emergency wilderness physician, and member of the Hood River Crag Rats, the oldest mountain rescue team in the country. When Dr. Van Tilburg's beeper goes off, the call may take him racing up a mountain peak to rescue an injured hiker, into a blizzard to search for missing skiers, or to a mountain airplane crash scene for body recovery.

Dr. Van Tilburg's work requires a unique combination of emergency medicine, survival skills, agility, and extreme sports. In Mountain Rescue Doctor, Van Tilburg shares personal stories of harrowing and suspenseful rescues and recoveries, including the recent Mount Hood disaster, which claimed the lives of three climbers. Mountain Rescue Doctor is an exhilarating tour through the perils of nature and medicine.

Publishers Weekly

A resident of Hood River, Ore., an emergency room physician and a member of Crag Rats ("the first official volunteer mountain rescue group in the nation"), Van Tilburg (Emergency Survival: A Pocket Guide) has divided his fast-paced account of Mt. Hood rescues by season. In the winter, he explains the dangers of tree wells, patches of loose snow that can snare skiers and snowboarders. One hot Fourth of July, he takes a trek through icy black water in a box canyon, engineering the tricky retrieval of a cliff jumper with a back fracture. Detailing each rescue operation from the first call mobilizing teams of volunteers to grateful notes from the families of those rescued, Van Tilburg also offers snippets of environmental history and outdoor law. For readers who are unfamiliar with the rugged and beautiful Hood River area, he balances its undeniable perils with the joys of its scenic wonders, noting that "the thrill of risk is an inseparable aspect of adventure sport." 8 pages of color photos not seen by PW. In this fast-paced book, Van Tilburg recounts his experiences as a member of the Crag Rats, a mountain search-and-rescue team operating out of the Mount Hood, OR, area. Started in 1926, the Crag Rats are made up of extremely skilled, highly organized volunteers who face blizzards, darkness, freezing water, and other extreme conditions to help rescue sports enthusiasts who have become lost or injured in the mountains. As a medical doctor, a previously published author (Backcountry Snowboarding; Introducing Your Kids to the Outdoors), and an adventure-sports devotee himself, Van Tilburg is uniquely qualified to describe the fears, excitement, frustration, and rewards of these searches. He examines the high costs of search-and-rescue operations and provides an interesting overview of the debate on whether victims should be held responsible for some of these costs. Young adults will likely enjoy this introduction to the field of wilderness medicine. Filled with adventure and good advice, it is recommended for high school and public libraries.

The Ultimate New York Body Plan: 2 Weeks to a Total Transformation

Author: David Kirsch

David Kirsch, personal trainer and a fitness guru of the TV show "Extreme Makeover," has whipped into shape some of the most famous bodies in America. Supermodels Heidi Klum and Linda Evangelista, as well as celebrities such as Liv Tyler, have turned to David Kirsch for his foolproof training regimen when they needed to get to their level of optimum fitness--fast. Now in The Ultimate New York Body Plan, Kirsch shows you how to burn fat and get fit in only two weeks--just in time for that class reunion or anniversary cruise.

This program includes:

  • Easy-to-master lessons on which body parts to target and get the shape you want
  • A customized "ABCDEF" diet--banning alcohol, bread, starchy carbs, dairy, extra sweets, fruits, and most fats--with delicious recipes and menus
  • A high-powered exercise plan combining fat-burning moves with cardio-sculpting workouts
  • The fastest way to build muscle mass and boost metabolism

Publishers Weekly

Manhattan fitness trainer and wellness coach Kirsch (Sound Mind, Sound Body) has expertly sculpted the bodies of Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista and worked his fitness miracles on ABC's Extreme Makeover. Now he tends to readers seeking a fast way to slim down before that big wedding or bikini season. Normally, Kirsch says, he eschews "get fit quick" schemes, but he claims his combined focus on mind, body, nutrition and exercise will help followers shed unwanted pounds in just 14 days. Make no mistake, however: the regimen is strict ("when you are looking for extreme results you must make extreme sacrifices"), and one must be in fairly good shape even to attempt it (the author includes a pre-program to get readers ready). In addition to a rigorous, cardio-sculpting workout-90 minutes daily, using a stability ball, medicine ball and lightweight dumbbells (photos of the moves included)-Kirsch provides a nutrition plan that prohibits alcohol and limits carbs and unhealthy fats. For those who don't consider a protein shake a sufficient meal, he suggests "real food," such as egg whites, salad and lean proteins, and includes such tempting recipes as Roasted Red Pepper Frittata, Mediterranean Chicken Stir Fry, and Turkey and Spinach Burgers. Kirsch's plan requires "150 percent" commitment, but those desiring near-instant gratification will no doubt be rewarded. The real payoff, Kirsch concludes, is that by maintaining the basic principles even after the initial two weeks (though somewhat toning down the regimen), his followers will be healthy and trim for life. In his second book (after Sound Body, Sound Mind), Kirsch, owner of New York City's Madison Square Club, presents an intense two-week fitness and nutrition regimen that may help people achieve the aesthetic results required for special events like a high school reunion or wedding; it is the same program that he developed for television's Extreme Makeover. While clearly written for women, it may also benefit men owing to its strict guidelines and no-nonsense presentation. For each day, Kirsch sets out five meals to be eaten between seven a.m. and seven p.m. (no alcohol, bread, carbohydrates, dairy, sweets, fruits, or fats!) and fat-burning exercises involving dumbbells, a medicine ball, and a stability ball. He emphasizes that this program is just a starting point and that a lifestyle change will be necessary to maintain results. Fitness is hard work and if done properly and safely takes time. Those who need quick results can take a chance on this book, but they should be prepared for a mental and physical challenge; those with more than two weeks to get in shape will benefit more from Kirsch's first book.
