When Illness Strikes or Her Healthy Heart

When Illness Strikes: Let Edgar Cayce Help You Manifest Your Healing Response

Author: Elaine Hruska

What do you do when you get sick? Believe it or not, the answer can determine your recovery. Elaine Hruska has written a clear, concise book on healing and what it really means. While many books on health and healing are geared toward those who are not ill but trying to prevent illness, this book speaks directly to those who have been diagnosed with a sickness. It covers topics including the alternative causes of illness, such as attitudes or emotions; the modalities and treatments for illness ranging from homeopathic to conventional medicine; the thought that if we nourish the mind, the body will follow; and the belief that the choices we make can either help us in our healing or hinder our progress in getting better.

Her Healthy Heart: A Woman's Guide to Preventing and Reversing Heart Disease Naturally

Author: Linda Ojeda

With more women dying of heart disease than from all types of cancer combined, it is astonishing that the medical community understands far less about heart disease in women than it knows about the same condition in men. Because most of the available data on heart disease is based on research conducted on men, women and their doctors are forced to look for symptoms and risk factors that may be different or not charted in traditional medicine. Linda Ojeda's book is a valuable resource, telling women how to prevent heart disease without hormone replacement therapy or other medications.

Her Healthy Heart provides detailed information on how women can reduce their risk of heart disease by making changes in diet, increasing physical activity, and managing stress. It is designed for women who wish to combine Western medicine with complementary natural options. Individual chapters discuss fat, fiber, protein, B-vitamins, and antioxicants (which Ojeda refers to as "The Secret Weapon"). The book features Ojeda's 50-item lifestyle questionnaire so women can evaluate their current physical and emotional health and pinpoint areas to begin working on.

I Remain in Darkness

Author: Annie Ernaux

Written in journal form, Annie Ernaux's account of her mother's steady decline spans a period of nearly three years. When her mother first becomes ill, Ernaux takes her in. Soon, it becomes painfully obvious that professional help is needed. Diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, her mother enters a nursing home, never to leave. As it explores the complexities of death and parent-child role reversal, Ernaux's latest work takes its place on the shelf beside John Bayley's Elegy for Iris and Roger Kamenetz's Terra Infirma. "As revealed by Ernaux, the details of a loved one's deterioration have such emblematic force and terror that the particular becomes universal." - The New York Times Book Review

Library Journal

Unlike Aaron Alterra's The Caregiver (LJ 10/15/99), this slim volume by noted French writer Ernaux (Simple Passion) is not a straightforward medical account of her mother's death from Alzheimer's; instead, it is a collection of the notes, in their original form, that Ernaux jotted down at the time of her mother's illness. "When I write down all these things, I scribble away as fast as I can (as if I felt guilty), without choosing my words." Here in their raw, uncensored form are the "vestiges of pain"--the anger, guilt, and grief that Ernaux felt during her mother's two-year decline. Here are the graphic images of her once-powerful mother wearing diapers, the woman in the next bed peeing on the floor, a drawer in the bedside table filled with a human turd. Because the notes have not been edited, there is a choppy, unpolished feel to the book, which is perhaps Ernaux's intention--as a possible counterpoint to A Woman's Story (1991), her fictionalized memoir of her mother's life and death. For literary and Alzheimer's collections.--Wilda Williams, "Library Journal" Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.

Kirkus Reviews

A small, powerful, and overwritten memoir of a mother's slow deterioration and death in a nursing home. Ernaux is a prize winning author (A Man's Place, 1992, also translated by Leslie) whose mother had been strict, controlling, but loving. When her aging, widowed mother first fell ill, Ernaux took her home. However, as her mother's senility turned into mind-wasting Alzheimer's disease, the author had her placed in an old-age home, where she visited and wrote this journal. This emotionally charged scenario has been handled before, notably in Rodger Kamenetz's Terra Infirma (1998). Erneaux's memoir is at its most effecting when describing details, such as her mother losing her glasses, dentures, modesty, posture, and possessiveness—rather than telling us she's losing her mind and body. Too often, however, poignant scenes are dampened by the memoirist's insistence on spelling things out. She precedes the heartbreaking realization that her mother "thinks that I have come to take her away and that she is going to leave this place" with the neon signs indicating that "it's beyond sadness" and promising "painful moments." Her disheveled mother is soiled with excrement, has to be spoon-fed, her right hand "grasping the left like an unknown object," yet Ernaux remarks: "I have no idea what she thought of sex or how she made love." The author is either in deep trouble or is French. Readers of all nationalities will sympathize with Ernaux's having to be her mother's mother, the good and bad memories of her girlhood evoked by these horrific scenes and emotions, and her tortured feelings of guilt in moments when she hates this former provider for draining her so. The pain doesn't ease atjournal's end, when Ernaux's mother abruptly passes away. The impact of this courageous, sometimes unsubtle little book is sure to not pass away quickly.

Library Journal

Written especially for parents/care givers, this is another excellent book on the value of nutrition that will be highly useful when children are ill. This is an expansion of Cooking Well, which had a chapter on sick children. Included are tempting, low-cholesterol, low-sugar, low-fat, iron-rich, easily digested, high-fiber, and fun foods that will please kids and help make them well. Highly recommended for all health collections. [Index not seen.]Loraine F. Sweetland, Rebok Memorial Lib., Silver Spring, Md.

Dr. Earl Mindell's Unsafe at Any Meal: How to Avoid Hidden Toxins in Your Food

Author: Earl Mindell

The ultimate health-defense guide for eating wisely and safely

Food manufacturers rely increasingly on the use of chemicals to produce larger crops and livestock and to extend the shelf lives of products. Foods once considered safe are being tagged as potential health hazards on a regular basis. Contaminated beef, orange juice carrying salmonella--the list continues to grow. The nearly 3,000 additives being concealed in food products can cause everything from asthma and headaches to heart problems, miscarriages, cancer, and more. Dr. Earl Mindell's Unsafe at Any Meal, a bestseller in its previous edition, is the consumer's best weapon against the hidden hazards in food, drink, herbs, and medicines.

Dr. Earl Mindell, one of America's leading nutrition experts, exposes the food industry's chemical cover-ups and provides crucial information on what to look out for when shopping, cooking, and taking medications. This thoroughly revised, updated edition includes coverage of genetically modified foods as well as foods designed to provide specific health benefits.

Earl L. Mindell, R.Ph., Ph.D., has written extensively on health. A popular lecturer, he is an authority on nutrients, supplements, and natural health.

Book about: Who Moved My Cheese or Winning Every Day

T'ai Chi as a Path of Wisdom

Author: Linda Myoki Lehrhaupt

Unlike most t'ai chi books, which focus strictly on how to do the t'ai chi forms, T'ai Chi as a Path of Wisdom presents a personal, practical view of this intriguing martial art. Lehrhaupt shares illuminating stories from her own life and the lives of her students that show how t'ai chi can be a vehicle for profound self-discovery and spiritual growth. In learning to master each body posture, t'ai chi students often confront self-doubt, frustration, and the desire to compete and compare themselves to others—problems that also arise in daily life. Lehrhaupt shows how these and other obstacles provide valuable opportunities to deepen awareness and recognize the striking continuities between practice and everyday life. Each section of the book includes practical exercises designed to enhance students' understanding of t'ai chi movements, and a helpful appendix answers many frequently asked questions about t'ai chi training such as how to find a teacher and how to balance practice with family life. Full of useful insights and guidance, T'ai Chi as a Path of Wisdom will be a valuable companion for all students of this increasingly popular martial art.

Publishers Weekly

Martial artist and ordained Zen priest Linda Myoki Lehrhaupt offers T'ai Chi as a Path of Wisdom, an anecdotal description of how t'ai chi is more than just a martial art, but a way of life. The book contains some advice on technique, as well as useful exercises for readers to practice their methodology, but its core is a personal story of how the author came to understand chi as a life force. It's surprisingly well-written for a debut book. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

Soap Water and Sex or Manual de la terapia de los pies

Soap, Water and Sex: A Lively Guide to the Benefits of Sexual Hygiene and to Coping with Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Author: Jacob Lipman

In addition to a frank discussion of the signs and symptoms of more than thirty diseases that can be associated with sexual activity - including AIDS and herpes, gonorrhea, syphilis, and many more - Soap, Water, and Sex offers explicit instructions regarding how to avoid them as well as a glossary of technical terms and an extensive bibliography to improve the odds that sexually active couples will safely navigate the minefield of modern intimacy. Despite the widespread media attention to sex, surveys have repeatedly shown that the public is quite ignorant of how to engage in a sexual life that maximizes joy and minimizes frustration, pain, and disease. In addition to offering methods for avoiding STDs, Dr. Jacob Lipman's provocative new book discusses common, often neglected areas of sexual hygiene that frequently stifle sexual pleasure. This book will help dispel many misconceptions while promoting happiness and health.

The Bach Remedies Workbook or A Cut Above

The Bach Remedies Workbook

Author: Stefan Ball

Here is a complete, self-contained course in the selection and use of the Bach Flower Remedies. The course begins with first principles, then in seven progressive sections covers all 38 of the remedies and their uses.

Charles William Daniel (1871-1955) was a maverick free-thinker whose tiny publishing house had august links with many of the most influential thinkers and movements of the 20th century. To wit, copies of Daniel's books could be found in the library at Ghandi's ashram. This spirit lived on after his death, and the company maintained its niche by publishing definitive texts on a variety of spiritual and esoteric subjects. Many of these titles, notably those on Aromatherapy and Bach Flower remedies, have become standard works on the subject. When the C.W. Daniel list went looking for a new home, the Vermilion and Rider imprints were the natural place for this wonderful collection of authors.

Natural Obsessions: Striving to Unlock the Deepest Secrets of the Cancer Cell

Author: Natalie Angier

As dramatic as The Double Hex and as absorbing as The Soul of a New Machine, Natural Obsessions explores the advanced reaches of molecular biology, the nature of the human cell, and the genes that control cancer. It unforgettably portrays some of the best young scientists in the world, the rewards and discouragements of scientific research, and the very process of scientific inquiry.

Publishers Weekly

Two rival teams of eminent biologists studying oncogenesthe coils of DNA that control cancer growth in cellsare the focus of this overlong, detailed report by a New York University Graduate School instructor. One group, at the MIT-affiliated Whitehead Institute, is led by molecular biologist Robert Weinberg, portrayed here as the father figure of a bickering but close-knit tribe of underpaid graduate students and ``postdocs.'' Michael Wigler, a flamboyant, eccentric prodigy, heads the other team at the Cold Spring Harbor laboratory in New York. The significance of cancer-fighting discoveries tends to get lost here amid soul-searching, petty rivalries and tentative experiments. Scientific research, we learn, is an enterprise beset by ridiculous mistakes and false results. A fondness for solving puzzles seems to motivate these scientists more than a desire to help suffering humanity. Photos not seen by PW. (June)

Library Journal

In recent years, molecular biology has developed so rapidly and become so complex, it is difficult even for a scientist to follow the latest manipulations of genetic material and related discoveries, such as the role of oncogenes (mutant genes, apparently triggering the development of cancer). Journalist Angier spent several months at two laboratories that are in the forefront of this research, observing the work of graduate students, postdoctorate fellows, and technicians, all under the command of senior scientists. Her involvement with their lives, work, triumphs, and failures overshadows her attempts to colloquialize and clarify the scientific results of the research, so the reader eventually abandons the science being done for Angier's vivid and absorbing portrayal of the people doing it. Recommended for this reason, rather than for its exposition of the oncogene search. Eleanor Maass, Maass Assocs., New Milford, Pa.

Encienda la Chispa Para Adelgazar: Un Plan Que Potenciara Su Metabolismo Para Quemar Grasa las 24 Horas Del Dia

Author: Robert K Cooper

New In Spanish from Rodale!

Discover how easy it can be to drop those unwanted pounds by flipping the switch that revs up metabolism to maximize fat burning all day long

Could losing weight really be as simple as flipping a switch? Absolutely, says Dr. Robert Cooper, one of America’s leading weight-loss researchers. The trouble with most popular diet-and-exercise programs is that they boot up the metabolic thermostat, or Meta-Stat (an area in the brain that regulates metabolism), for only short spurts. The rest of the time the body is in fat-storing mode. But if our Meta-Stat stays on 24 hours a day, we burn fat constantly—and build energy as well.

In Flip the Switch, Lose the Weight, Dr. Cooper reveals scientifically proven strategies that enable us to turn on our Meta-Stat and maintain optimum metabolism all day long.

This groundbreaking book:

• provides an easy 20-minute exercise plan that gently works the body differently on successive days for maximum fat-burning, energy-generating effect

• allows readers to customize their weight-loss programs based on individual goals and lifestyle preferences

• provides an exclusive "Success Map" for readers to chart their progress

• includes complete meal plans and over 100 recipes, all designed to fuel the Meta-Stat for maximum fat burning

3-Hour Diet: How Low-Carb Diets Make You Fat and Timing Makes You Thin

Author: Jorge Cruis

Following the amazing success of his New York Times bestseller 8 Minutes in the Morning, America's #1 online weight loss specialist, Jorge Cruise, is back with a revolutionary diet book that keeps with his trademark hassle-free, time-friendly approach.

It's a fact: the low-carb craze is everywhere. Another fact: two-thirds of Americans are still overweight, and no one is getting thinner. Although low-carb diets produce short term weight loss, the results are not sustainable in the long term. Dieticians, fitness experts, and medical publications are slowly awakening to the fact that the low-carb diet isn't the answer to weight loss nor a solution to the obesity epidemic.

What is the solution? Jorge Cruise's The 3-Hour Diet reveals that timing is the revolutionary weight loss element that has been kept secret until now.

Finally -- a diet plan that lets you eat what you really want and that actually works long-term! Jorge Cruise introduces a revolutionary diet and lifestyle plan that will shed the pounds for good. The answer is not in a grapefruit diet, a cabbage-soup diet, and certainly not in a low-carb diet. Losing weight and keeping it off is not only about what you eat but when you eat. Knowing when to eat resets the body's metabolism and turns off its "starvation protection mechanism," ensuring that fat is released and fat-burning muscle preserved. So get ready to lose two pounds every week using The 3-Hour Diet™ -- with no carb counting, no calorie counting, no starvation, no deprivation, and no exercising. The 3-Hour Diet™ includes:

  • A recipe guide with options for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and delicious treats from a range of homemade, frozen, and fast-food choices
  • A 28-day visual eating planner to promote organization and accountability in meal planning
  • Tips and advice from Jorge's clients on managing time and making meals on the go
  • A sample mini-week of "8 Minute Moves®" for those who want to take health and fitness to the next level
With his trademark easy-to-follow instructions, accessibility, and client success stories, Jorge Cruise's The 3-Hour Diet™ is a dynamite combination of proven success and medical innovation. Losing weight and keeping it off has never been easier!

Publishers Weekly

Cruise promises to help readers lose two pounds every week, without counting calories or depriving themselves of carbs. It's all about timing, says the USA Today fitness columnist, whose diet advice has been featured everywhere from O and Prevention to the Today show and Good Morning America. Cruise theorizes that if a person allows more than three hours to pass between eating, a body turns on its natural "starvation protection mechanism," which causes the body to consume muscle. When this happens, one's resting metabolism is adversely affected. In an attempt to eliminate his main competition, Cruise dedicates an entire chapter to debunking low-carb diets. He claims they actually cause people to gain more weight in the long run. Along with an explication of his recommended diet and exercise plans, Cruise provides readers with 30 "timelines," charts they should fill out every morning at breakfast. These visual aids include space to write down what time each meal (or snack) will take place that day and what each will consist of (every meal must contain a balance of carbohydrates, fat and proteins). To help readers determine which foods fall into which categories, and how much of them they must eat, Cruise, who is also AOL's weight loss coach, provides recipes and "The All New Cruise Down Plate," a twist on the food pyramid. Although Cruise tends to oversimplify, this is overall one of the best diet books to hit the market in recent years, brimming with success stories, photos and plenty of optimistic energy. There is an ever increasing awareness that all patients are entitled to a good quality death and that diagnosing end of life is as important as diagnosing a chest infection. This is particularly true for renal patients where dialysis can be continued and complications treated even when the patient is dying. End of Life Care in Nephrology provides practical guidance on all aspects of this difficult field; the clinical state of dying renal patients, how to control their symptoms, and how to help patients and their medical teams discuss difficult issues such as dialysis withdrawal and death. The book highlights how to facilitate good communication between renal and palliative care teams and the theory is illustrated by case histories.
Written by a palliative care physician who has worked closely with renal patients for many years, a nephrologist, and a counsellor, this handbook will be ideal for doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals working in renal medicine and palliative care.

The Prozac Alternative: Natural Relief from Depression with St. John's Wort, Kava, and Other Alternative Therapies

Author: Ran Knishinsky

• A comprehensive guide to the use of St. John's wort and other alternative therapies for treatment of depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders

• Offers a comprehensive look at St. John's wort--the most significant natural remedy for depression--including its history in herbalism, current clinical uses, safety, and side effects

• Discusses other natural alternatives such as Kava, Melatonin, and 5-HTP as treatment options to depression

In the early 1990s the sale of Prozac exceeded the sale of all other antidepressant drugs in both American and world markets. But today St. John's wort is recommended 3 to 1 over Prozac as a primary treatment for depression in European countries such as Germany--and its sales continue to skyrocket in the United States. Safe, all-natural, and less expensive than synthetic drugs, St. John's wort is the ideal natural therapy for many people's depression, anxiety, and other related mood disorders.

The Prozac Alternative offers a comprehensive look at St. John's wort, including its history in herbalism, current clinical uses, and safety and side effects, as well as how it compares with other natural alternatives such as Kava, Melatonin, and 5-HTP. It also discusses other uses of these natural substances as treatment alternatives to Western medicine for a variety of medical conditions.

Food for Thought

Author: Steven F Sapontzis

Do animals really suffer in the production of meat? Does the pleasure of eating animal flesh outweigh any pain that might be involved for the animal? Is a vegetarian diet innately healthier than a diet that contains animal products? Do religious traditions teach that humans have a God-given right to sacrifice animals for our benefit or that we have a special responsibility to care for God's creations? For anyone who has ever wondered about the ethics of killing animals for food, this is the definitive collection of essays on the issue. Written by internationally recognized scholars on both sides of the debate, the provocative articles included in Food for Thought will provide both vegetarians and meat eaters with a thorough grounding in all aspects of this controversial topic.

After an introduction to the nature of the debate by editor Steve F. Sapontzis, seven sections examine the finer points of the subject. The first section reviews the history of vegetarianism. The discussion in the second section highlights the health issues and what anthropology has to tell us about human diet. Section three includes classic cases for and against vegetarianism and new essays rebutting these classic arguments. The fourth section examines religious teachings about eating animals drawn from Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, as well as Native American and Eastern traditions. Finally, in the last three sections, the authors debate the ethics of eating meat in connection with feminism, environmentalism, and multiculturalism.

The contributors to this insightful volume include Carol J. Adams, Neal Barnard, John Berkman, Stephen R. L. Clark, Carl Cohen, Randall Collura, Gary L. Comstock, Deane Curtin, Daniel Dombrowski, Johanna T. Dwyer, Jennifer Everett, Frederick Ferre, Richard Foltz, R. G. Frey, James Gaffney, Kathryn Paxton George, Lori Gruen, Bart Gruzalski, Ned Hettinger, Roberta Kalechofsky, Marti Kheel, Kristine Kieswer, Andrew Linzey, Franklin M. Loew, Evelyn Pluhar, Val Plumwood, Rod Preece, James Rachels, Tom Regan, Roger Scruton, and Peter Singer. Containing virtually a Who's Who of philosophers, social critics, environmentalists, feminists, and religious scholars who have participated in the vegetarianism debate over the past quarter century, this accessible collection provides the latest thinking on a subject that has provoked intense reaction among individuals and interest groups alike.

The Handbook of Posttraumatic Growth Research and Practice

Author: Lawrence Calhoun

Posttraumatic growth is an area in which investigations are now being undertaken in many different parts of the world. The view that individuals can be changed--sometimes in radically good ways--by their struggle with trauma is ancient and widespread. However, the systematic focus by scholars and clinicians on the possibilities for growth from the struggle with crisis is relatively recent. There are now a growing number of studies and scholarly papers on the antecedents, correlates, and consequences of posttraumatic growth, and there are also theoretical models that can help guide the research further. It is clear, however, that this phenomenon is not yet well understood.

The Handbook of Posttraumatic Growth: Research and Practice provides both clinicians and researchers with a comprehensive and up-to-date view of what has been done so far. In addition, it uses the foundations of what has been done to provide suggestions for the next useful steps to take in understanding posttraumatic growth. The book offers contributions of important and influential scholars representing a wide array of perspectives of posttraumatic growth. This volume serves as an impetus for additional work, both in the academic aspects and in the possibilities for clinical applications of posttraumatic growth.

This Handbook will appeal to students, practitioners, and researchers working in a broad array of disciplines and human services.

The Gift from My Son or Getting the Best for Your Child with Autism

The Gift from My Son

Author: Keli Lindelien

When Keli Lindelien's son Benjamin was diagnosed with autism, her life was turned upside down. No longer could she function as a family law attorney or juvenile prosecutor. Now she had a new full-time job: taking care of Benjamin.

But she wanted to do more than merely use behavior-modification therapies to make him fit in. She wanted to understand him and help him. The diagnosis proved to be the beginning of an extraordinary journey.

Combining external research and inner work to enhance her understanding of autism, she searched for and discovered natural medicines and therapies that reversed many symptoms. In the process, she learned to communicate with Benjamin at his own level.

Watching carefully, she discovered that Benjamin's condition included not only disabilities but also unsuspected abilities. Ultimately, her observation and experience led her to develop a new theory about the role of left versus right brain dominance in autism.

This breakthrough view of autism, told by the mother of an autistic child, includes a comprehensive chart of the progression and reversal of Benjamin's physical symptoms that resulted from a course of natural therapies, tips to parents of autistic children on toilet training and travel, and a description of other resources available.

My Office Is Killing Me or Users Guide to Heart Healthy Nutrients

My Office Is Killing Me!: The Sick Building Survival Guide

Author: Jeffrey C May

Bacteria and mold may lurk undetected in carpets or in the heating or cooling system of your office or school. When inhaled, the by-products of these organisms can cause allergy and asthma symptoms. Chemical vapors emitted by office furniture and equipment may also foul the air we breathe indoors, causing headaches, eye irritation, or other symptoms. Here the author of the best-selling My House Is Killing Me! and co-author of The Mold Survival Guide turns his attention to indoor air quality in public buildings. Blending his extensive professional experience with scientific explanations, May helps us see these buildings through the eyes of a building scientist, microscopist, and organic chemist. He offers a step-by-step approach to identifying, controlling, and often eliminating the sources of indoor air pollutants and allergens. Whether it's a case of mold in an elementary school or inadequate ventilation in a high-rise office building, this valuable guide can help people cope when the air they breathe indoors is making them sick.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer:J. Thomas Pierce, MBBS PhD(Navy Environmental Health Center)
Description:Jeffrey May previously authored My House Is Killing Me!, a similar self-help manual. It is somewhat surprising that self-help manuals have not become more popular in a field such as indoor air pollution. May's series is something different and one that is needed.
Purpose:This is intended to serve as a guide for people coping with air pollution problems they believe are originating with so-called indoor air. In sections where the author presents new material of a technical nature (usually chemistry concepts) he makes a special plea for the reader to be objective regarding why special terms are necessary. His blend of technical information with explanations for a broad readership is somewhat unique.
Audience:The book is a fun little read and I think a wide variety of individuals will enjoy it. Beyond its curbside appeal, it may well be a book of first resort when individuals search the Internet for a reasonably priced book in this area. Its secondary audience is the author's peer group, other indoor air pollutant consultants, who could borrow some of his protocols and explanations, both of which are really quite good.
Features:The information is organized in three major parts: basics (poor indoor air, shelter in the storm, diseased dйcor, and sea of air); daily life (schools, 9-to-5, infirmaries and courthouses, retail spaces and recreation); and final test (do-it-yourself, professionals, and more technical data). The conclusion is very brief but it is complemented by a resource guide, a list of abbreviations, notes, and anindex.
Assessment:I liked this book and will likely spend a weekend afternoon with it again. Don't be put off by the title. This little book has a lot to offer.

What People Are Saying

John Spengler
'Millions of us experience poor indoor air quality without having any idea why, or what can be done about it. In My Office Is Killing Me! Jeff May explains how a building operates, what building materials are made of, how air circulates, and what kinds of indoor contaminants we may inhale-and more. Thank you, Jeff May, for making the complex and diverse field of indoor air quality accessible and entertaining, and for giving us the information we need to improve the air we breathe."
Department of Environmental Health, Harvard School of Public Health

Paul Enright
"The best source of information on sick buildings that I've ever read. If you suffer from sinusitis, asthma, or other symptoms when you go to work, buy this book."
M.D., College of Public Health, University of Arizona

Jay M. Portnoy
"This easy-to-read book is scientifically accurate and practical for anyone and everyone concerned about the air we breathe."

Gary Nulls Ultimate Anti Aging Program or Hot Plants

Gary Null's Ultimate Anti-Aging Program

Author: Gary Null PhD

Anti-aging theories may look good on paper, but is it possible to reverse or stop the aging process in real people? Gary Null, America's leading expert on alternative health, wanted results that could be measured by actual life experience, and could make individuals look and feel young and energtic. So he asked over 1,000 volunteers to help him try out his comprehensive four-part anti-aging program based on the most recent scientific findings on staying young. Three years later, the same men and women who participated in his study experienced dramatic results that were documented in the PBS special, How To Live Forever.

In concise clear language, Gary Null brings you the same plan that changed the bodies and mental outlook of the participants who used it first. Gary Null's Ultimate Anti-Aging Program begins begins by teaching you the very best and safest ways to detoxify your body from the poison's that accumulate and force it to age. You'll then learn how to fortify your immune system through nutrition and diet, to fight cancer, arthritis, heart disease and dozens of other ailments -naturally and without prescription drugs. Next, instead of losing your hight or becoming dangerously frail, you will find out how to effectively build body mass and strengthen bones. Finally, Gary Null explains how to use the mind-body connection to conquer stress, banish depression, and find joy in each new day.

Library Journal

Though not a medical doctor, Null (Get Healthy Now) has authored many health books on subjects ranging from allergies to Native American healing. Central to this program is the author's conviction that aging results from the toxic effects of free radicals, molecules that have unpaired electrons that damage the body when they try to steal electrons from other cells. Eliminating or reducing toxins and stress from one's diet and environment can lessen the number of free radicals and thus slow, and even reverse, the aging process. Null advocates an exercise program and an organic vegetarian diet in conjunction with herb and vitamin supplements to detoxify the body. Lacking in both scientific data to support many of his claims and step-by-step directions to implement them, Null's "program," narrated by Robert Deyan, is mostly a description of the possible ways to treat a copious number of medical conditions. Also, an annotated listing of the supposed medical benefits of various natural substances and treatments, included on the last two tapes, is quite unsuitable for audio. Not recommended.--Beth Farrell, Portage Cty. Dist. Lib., OH Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.

Yoga Zone Introduction to Yoga or The Uses of Wild Plants

Yoga Zone Introduction to Yoga: A Beginner's Guide to Health, Fitness, and Relaxation

Author: Alan Finger

Let the modern authority on yoga guide you on the most important journey you'll ever take.

As people search for inner peace amid increasingly hectic lives, the practice of yoga continues to gain popularity. Yoga means to yoke, or to bring together, the various aspects of the self—body, mind, and spirit—and while the physical and mental benefits of yoga are truly astounding, to many people the idea of yoga is intimidating. In fact, nothing could be easier than starting a yoga practice, and Yoga Zone Introduction to Yoga is the perfect guide.

In the first section, Yoga Master Alan Finger offers a brief history of the different types of yoga and how they are practiced in the West, including an explanation of the ISHTA yoga that Alan created and that is taught at Yoga Zone. You'll learn about the benefits of yoga and how to prepare for a practice with different breathing exercises. Next Alan outlines two series of beginner postures, accompanying each pose with detailed instructions on how to achieve it, along with tips and modifications for various fitness levels. All the exercises are fully illustrated and the text is instructional yet friendly, in the tradition of a Yoga Zone studio class. Following the postures, there's a special section on relaxation and meditation, cornerstones of any yoga practice. Packed with personality and full of valuable information, Yoga Zone Introduction to Yoga will introduce you to a life of unlimited possibilities and infinite joy.

Library Journal

These two titles address the benefits of practicing yoga. Finger's Yoga ZoneR Introduction to Yoga takes a broader approach. Creator of the ISHTA yoga taught at his New York City-based Yoga ZoneR studios, Finger explains his program and offers a brief history of different types of yoga. Outlines of two series of beginners' programs are well illustrated with photos of poses and accompanied by detailed instructions, tips, and variations. A section covers relaxation and meditation and breathing techniques. Healing Mudras has a much narrower focus. Mudras, in Buddhism and Hinduism, are symbolic gestures involving hands, fingers, and arms that are used in ceremonies and dance or seen in artwork. Mesko, a former dancer and certified yoga therapist, takes a mindful and introspective approach combining movement with chants in order to achieve specific self-affirming goals. All 52 mudras are demonstrated with photos of the author, along with instructions for breathing, eye movements, and mantras, which spoken aloud impart greater mental and physical energy and a healing quality. Experienced yoga students seeking to move beyond the basic postures or individuals with physical limitations will find this guide useful. Both titles are easy to follow and understand. However, since a number of introductory yoga books are already available, Finger's is an optional purchase. Because it concentrates on a very specific aspect of yoga practice, Mesko's guide is a preferred choice for a wellness collection or public library with a limited budget seeking to round out its yoga collection.--Deborah Anne Broocker, Georgia Perimeter Coll., Dunwoody Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
