Jamba Juice Power or The Whole Pregnancy Handbook

Jamba Juice Power

Author: Kirk Perron

Jamba, from the African word "jama," meaning to celebrate, is the philosophy of Jamba Juice, a nationally known chain of smoothie and juice stores. Reasons to celebrate include good health, happiness, and of course, delicious, nutritious, all-natural energizing smoothies.

In Jamba Juice Power Jamba Juice founder Kirk Perron shares dozens of his easy-to-prepare smoothie recipes (a blender is the only equipment required), his nutrition advice (developed with a team of scientists and physicians), and his twenty-one-day lifestyle-changing plan with daily tips for mind, body, and spirit and a relevant smoothie recipe. Jamba Juice Power is filled with Jambaisms-"Do unto your body as you would have it do unto you" (Jambaism #3), health fast-fact sidebars, illustrations, and testimonials, all delivered with the hip, irreverent attitude that has made Jamba Juice a phenomenon.

Author Biography: Kirk Perron is the founder of Jamba Juice, a chain of 350 stores nationwide. Each day, Jamba Juice stores serve up nutritious, all-natural smoothies and juices to thousands of customers. Last year, sales topped $200 million. Perron is the recipient of numerous business awards, has been the subject of a cover story in Inc. magazine, and has been profiled in dozens of newspapers from the San Francisco Chronicle to The Washington Post.

As any pregnant woman knows, there are an overwhelming number of books on the pregnancy resource shelves, and choosing the right one can be trying. Two forces are at work: one conventional, one alternative. Which road to take? Evans has found a solution to the problem by offering a volume that nicely combines both approaches. The author, founder and director of an integrative holistic health center in Fairfield County, Conn., has written a thorough, supportive and comforting pregnancy book that covers preconceptions about health, mind-body medicine and fertility options; the emotional and physical impacts of pregnancy; nutritional needs, exercise, prenatal testing; medical complications, labor and birth (including vaginal births and cesareans); and postpartum. Appendixes suggest books for further reading and music for relaxation and meditation, list Web sites that sell nutritional supplements and botanical medications, explain terms like acupressure and vinyasa, give yoga poses for pregnant women and present readers with the opportunity to record their food, beverage, physical activity and symptoms during pregnancy. This thoughtful book lays out the numerous options available to pregnant women, and is essential reading for those who want to thoroughly savor one of the most fulfilling and transforming phases of life as a parent. Library Journal

Coauthored by an obstetrician who came to holistic medicine several years into his career and a former editor of Parents.com (the web site for Parents magazine), this carefully planned addition to the pregnancy and childbearing literature also includes contributions from a doula, a nurse midwife, and a practitioner of craniosacral therapy and Reiki. The book's perspective, although grounded in obstetrics and a safety-first approach, is informed by the holistic ethic of treating the whole person, including spiritual and emotional aspects. The idea is to allow the patient to lead the way in care and the natural wisdom of the body to lead the way through childbirth. Alternative treatments, such as herbal medicines and acupuncture, are considered. Oddly, home birth-which many people consider the most important "alternative" approach to mainstream childbirth practice-receives very brief and cautious treatment. Expectant mothers will enjoy this readable and reassuring book and can rely on it for accurate information. Recommended for public libraries.
