Gary Nulls Ultimate Anti Aging Program or Hot Plants

Gary Null's Ultimate Anti-Aging Program

Author: Gary Null PhD

Anti-aging theories may look good on paper, but is it possible to reverse or stop the aging process in real people? Gary Null, America's leading expert on alternative health, wanted results that could be measured by actual life experience, and could make individuals look and feel young and energtic. So he asked over 1,000 volunteers to help him try out his comprehensive four-part anti-aging program based on the most recent scientific findings on staying young. Three years later, the same men and women who participated in his study experienced dramatic results that were documented in the PBS special, How To Live Forever.

In concise clear language, Gary Null brings you the same plan that changed the bodies and mental outlook of the participants who used it first. Gary Null's Ultimate Anti-Aging Program begins begins by teaching you the very best and safest ways to detoxify your body from the poison's that accumulate and force it to age. You'll then learn how to fortify your immune system through nutrition and diet, to fight cancer, arthritis, heart disease and dozens of other ailments -naturally and without prescription drugs. Next, instead of losing your hight or becoming dangerously frail, you will find out how to effectively build body mass and strengthen bones. Finally, Gary Null explains how to use the mind-body connection to conquer stress, banish depression, and find joy in each new day.

Library Journal

Though not a medical doctor, Null (Get Healthy Now) has authored many health books on subjects ranging from allergies to Native American healing. Central to this program is the author's conviction that aging results from the toxic effects of free radicals, molecules that have unpaired electrons that damage the body when they try to steal electrons from other cells. Eliminating or reducing toxins and stress from one's diet and environment can lessen the number of free radicals and thus slow, and even reverse, the aging process. Null advocates an exercise program and an organic vegetarian diet in conjunction with herb and vitamin supplements to detoxify the body. Lacking in both scientific data to support many of his claims and step-by-step directions to implement them, Null's "program," narrated by Robert Deyan, is mostly a description of the possible ways to treat a copious number of medical conditions. Also, an annotated listing of the supposed medical benefits of various natural substances and treatments, included on the last two tapes, is quite unsuitable for audio. Not recommended.--Beth Farrell, Portage Cty. Dist. Lib., OH Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.

Yoga Zone Introduction to Yoga or The Uses of Wild Plants

Yoga Zone Introduction to Yoga: A Beginner's Guide to Health, Fitness, and Relaxation

Author: Alan Finger

Let the modern authority on yoga guide you on the most important journey you'll ever take.

As people search for inner peace amid increasingly hectic lives, the practice of yoga continues to gain popularity. Yoga means to yoke, or to bring together, the various aspects of the self—body, mind, and spirit—and while the physical and mental benefits of yoga are truly astounding, to many people the idea of yoga is intimidating. In fact, nothing could be easier than starting a yoga practice, and Yoga Zone Introduction to Yoga is the perfect guide.

In the first section, Yoga Master Alan Finger offers a brief history of the different types of yoga and how they are practiced in the West, including an explanation of the ISHTA yoga that Alan created and that is taught at Yoga Zone. You'll learn about the benefits of yoga and how to prepare for a practice with different breathing exercises. Next Alan outlines two series of beginner postures, accompanying each pose with detailed instructions on how to achieve it, along with tips and modifications for various fitness levels. All the exercises are fully illustrated and the text is instructional yet friendly, in the tradition of a Yoga Zone studio class. Following the postures, there's a special section on relaxation and meditation, cornerstones of any yoga practice. Packed with personality and full of valuable information, Yoga Zone Introduction to Yoga will introduce you to a life of unlimited possibilities and infinite joy.

Library Journal

These two titles address the benefits of practicing yoga. Finger's Yoga ZoneR Introduction to Yoga takes a broader approach. Creator of the ISHTA yoga taught at his New York City-based Yoga ZoneR studios, Finger explains his program and offers a brief history of different types of yoga. Outlines of two series of beginners' programs are well illustrated with photos of poses and accompanied by detailed instructions, tips, and variations. A section covers relaxation and meditation and breathing techniques. Healing Mudras has a much narrower focus. Mudras, in Buddhism and Hinduism, are symbolic gestures involving hands, fingers, and arms that are used in ceremonies and dance or seen in artwork. Mesko, a former dancer and certified yoga therapist, takes a mindful and introspective approach combining movement with chants in order to achieve specific self-affirming goals. All 52 mudras are demonstrated with photos of the author, along with instructions for breathing, eye movements, and mantras, which spoken aloud impart greater mental and physical energy and a healing quality. Experienced yoga students seeking to move beyond the basic postures or individuals with physical limitations will find this guide useful. Both titles are easy to follow and understand. However, since a number of introductory yoga books are already available, Finger's is an optional purchase. Because it concentrates on a very specific aspect of yoga practice, Mesko's guide is a preferred choice for a wellness collection or public library with a limited budget seeking to round out its yoga collection.--Deborah Anne Broocker, Georgia Perimeter Coll., Dunwoody Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.

Fundamentals of Pap Test Cytology or Sports Nutrition

Fundamentals of Pap Test Cytology

Author: Rana S Hoda

Fundamentals of Pap Test Cytology is intended as a practical primer on the Pap test. Using bold text, tables, and highlighted areas, this book offers readers a user-friendly text on Pap test fundamentals so readers may find specific information effortlessly. This book begins with a basic dictionary of terms, principles, and anatomy before detailing such issues as the Bethesda System, liquid-based and physiological cytology, reactive changes, human papillomavirus, and atypical squamous cells. The authors also discuss low-grade and high-grade squamous intra-epithelial lesions, invasive squamous carcinoma, endocervical and endometrial lesions, metastatic tumors, therapy-related changes, and the newest techniques in screening and managing Pap tests.

Fundamentals of Pap Test Cytology will be an incredibly useful tool for cytotechnologists and cytopathologists, as well as those in training.  Readers preparing for various proficiency and licensing examinations will also find helpful information throughout this volume.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Xiao Yun Wang, BS, MD(University of Kansas Medical Center)
Description:This concise and compact paperback details the clinical and laboratory aspects of the Pap test as it is used today. It employs an outline format with interspersed black-and-white images, tables, and figures, to present the topic in a user-friendly manner.
Purpose:As stated in the preface, the authors intend this to be a basic practical primer of the Pap test that also functions as a quick reference guide. Clinical information, such as the diagnostic implications of various lesions, is provided. In addition, the authors hope that the book may help those who plan to take proficiency and licensing examinations.
Audience:The audience includes all who are involved in evaluating the Pap test, cytotechnologists and cytopathologists, as well as those who are in training.
Features:The book is divided into brief chapters, each only 3 to 17 pages long. Traditional topics, such as the Bethesda System, liquid-based and conventional cytology, human papillomavirus and molecular identification techniques, and squamous and glandular lesions of the cervix, make up the bulk of the book. Each chapter is organized into sections that feature clinical information, diagnostic cytologic features and variations, benign and neoplastic mimickers, differential diagnosis, and management issues. Images, some with histologic correlation, and tables and figures are placed appropriately throughout. Although the images are black and white, they are of high quality and illustrate the topic with clarity. Two novel chapters ("A Short Dictionary of the Pap Test" and"Analogies in the Pap Test: Of Cornflakes and Raisins") may benefit those new to the subject. They succinctly define key words and phrases that are often thrown about by veteran cytologists. Another strong point is Appendix 1, which is an image overview of the cells of the Pap test. These are different from the slides in the main text; thus providing a second view.
Assessment:This is an excellent quick reference for anyone involved or interested in gynecologic cytology. It is packed with useful information, organized in a very accessible manner, which makes it an ideal benchside reference for cytopathologists and cytotechnologists at all levels of training.

Reviewer:Jamie A. Cooper, MS(University of Wisconsin-Madison)
Description:This book provides information about how fats, proteins, and select protein supplements impact physical performance.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide information about how these nutrients may or may not be beneficial for physical performance. Proper nutrition and macronutrient intake is an essential component for optimal physical performance and this book provides scientific and research-based information that is essential for people interested in the sports nutrition field.
Audience:According to the editor, this book is intended to provide information for professionals in sports medicine, fitness, and sports nutrition, as well as researchers, students, dietitians, and other health practitioners. While there is useful information for athletes and coaches, the scientific nature of this book makes it more appropriate for researchers and those in a health or science-related profession.
Features:This book focuses on different types of fats and proteins and some supplements. For each type of nutrient, the authors address the digestion, absorption, and function in the body. In addition, published research and literature is used to examine how these nutrients affect physical performance in terms of aerobic capacity and endurance and muscle mass and strength. Finally, they provide recommendations for amount and timing of nutrient intake to obtain optimal physical performance. While some supplements are covered, this book is not designed as a supplement guide for the many ergogenic aids available on the market today.
Assessment:Whilesome of the nutrients covered do not appear to have a huge impact on physical performance, this book does provide a comprehensive overview of any beneficial or negative impact the nutrients may have on physical performance.

Men and the War on Obesity or A Fit and Well Way of Life

Men and the War on Obesity: A Sociological Study

Author: Lee F Monaghan

According to official statistics, nearly two thirds of men in Britain are overweight or obese. Men and the War on Obesity offers a timely, critical and original take on the obesity debate, bringing male bodies into the frame and questioning the claim from public health that millions of people are unhealthy because they are 'overweight' or 'obese'. It focuses upon everyday men, who, according to medicalized ideas of appropriate weight for height and like most men in developed nations, are too heavy.

This challenging work redresses the gender bias in the existing literature and questions the degradation of big bodies as part of the widely declared war on fat.

Promoting Self Change From Addictive Behaviors or Control Your Blood Pressure

Promoting Self-Change From Addictive Behaviors

Author: Harald Klingemann

Many are addicted. Few are treated. Yet many who are not treated recover. Promoting Self-Change from Addictive Behaviors examines natural recovery as a clinical phenomenon, a field of inquiry, and a vital component of therapy. It also brings clinicians and counselors to a new understanding of addiction and recovery.

One of the few books on the topic, this updated edition offers alternatives to disease models of addiction by exploring personal pathways to recovery. Focusing on alcohol and drug problems, it provides a literature review of 40 years of studies on self-change with particular emphasis on the current decade and methodological issues (starting with how much or how little treatment constitutes "treatment"). The 24 experts keep the coverage consistently readable, and dozens of brief narratives from individuals who have successfully recovered from an addictive behavior without formal help lend valuable personal perspectives.

More of the book's key features: Core factors in self-change, from cognitive processes to social issues; Case examples of natural recovery from smoking, binge eating, problem gambling, and criminal behavior; Redefining the role of treatment in changing addictive behaviors; Cross-cultural, community, and prevention perspectives on promoting self-change; "Self-change toolbox" chapter offering assessment tools, recovery strategies, web links, and other online resources.

With Promoting Self-Change from Addictive Behaviors, health care professionals and researchers (from psychologists and social workers to nurses, sociologists, and physicians) can find more effective methods to fit client needs, and develop new insights into therecovery process. Public health workers and policymakers will also find informative strategies for tapping this rich therapeutic resource.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Gary B Kaniuk, Psy.D.(Cermak Health Services)
Description:This discussion of how individuals recover from addictive behaviors using self-change strategies delves into what actually constitutes &quto;treatment,&quto; and how addicted people have recovered on their own without a formal program.
Purpose:According to the editors, this book &quto;examines natural recovery as a clinical phenomenon, a field of inquiry, and a vital component of therapy. It also brings clinicians and counselors to a new understanding of addiction and recovery.&quto; In the foreword, Howard J. Shaffer, Harvard Medical School, notes that the earlier book (Promoting Self-Change from Problem Substance Abuse (Springer, 2001)) was a landmark in the field, &quto;and this book updates, integrates, and solidifies the best science on this topic.&quto;
Audience:It is intended for use as a reference by researchers, healthcare practitioners, public health specialists, and alcohol and drug policy makers. The editors and contributors represent institutions of higher learning and addiction centers from countries around the world, including the U.S., Sweden, Germany, Canada, Poland, and Spain.
Features:After chapters presenting an overview and a review of the literature, the book ends with a &quto;Self-Change Toolbox,&quto; which provides information regarding assessment instruments and relevant websites. Throughout the book there are excerpts from those who have recovered using self-change methods, a powerful addition. Interesting tables and figures also enhance the presentation. One of the editors, Linda Carter Sobell, notes: &quto;Ifsubstance use problems are viewed as lying along a continuum ranging from no problems to mild problems to severe problems, rather than as dichotomous (i.e. alcoholic versus not alcoholic, drug addict versus not drug addict) it has profound implications for how one views and treats such individuals. One implication is that there are multiple pathways to recovery, including self-change, a pathway that has largely been ignored by the addiction field.&quto;
Assessment:This excellent book highlights an approach that is not talked about much in the addictions field. Given that there are many people struggling with addiction, it is important to learn different ways of changing and overcoming. This book provides just that.

When Youre a Parent With Diabetes or New Light on Alcoholism

When You're a Parent With Diabetes: A Real Life Guide to Staying Healthy While Raising a Family

Author: Kathryn Gregorio Palmer

Finding the time and energy to maintain a healthy diet and exercise program is a challenge for any parent–but it can be a matter of life and death for parents with diabetes. Diabetes in pregnancy, if poorly controlled, can increase the risk of miscarriage, birth defects, and prematurity. Mood swings and personality changes during a parent’s spells of low blood sugar can frighten young children. And even on good days, it can be difficult for a parent to remember to check their glucose levels in the haste of getting the kids off to school.

From the psychological to the medical to the purely practical, Kathryn Gregorio Palmer guides parents with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes through the ups and downs of staying healthy while raising a family. Helpful for adoptive and stepparents as well as moms and dads, the book

answers questions such as:

• What are the risks of being pregnant with diabetes?

• Will I have the energy to handle a rambunctious child?

• Where can I hide my juice boxes so the kids don’t accidentally drink them all?

A mother of two, Palmer blends her own experience with expert advice and tips from other parents to create a compassionate and useful handbook that parents with diabetes will find indispensable.

Interesting textbook: This Must Be Hell or Complete Guide to Everyday Risks in Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

New Light on Alcoholism: God, Sam Shoemaker, and A.A. (Second Edition)

Author: Dick B

A comprehensive history and analysis of the all-but-forgotten specific contributions to A.A. spiritual principles and practices by New York's famous Episcopal preacher, the Rev. Dr. Samuel M. Shoemaker, Jr.--dubbed by Bill W. a "co-founder" of Alcoholics Anonymous and credited by Bill as the well-spring of A.A.'s spiritual recovery ideas.

This title is particularly vital to an understanding of A.A.'s spiritual program of recovery. In the earliest days of A.A., Bill Wilson defined spirituality as dependence upon our Creator. And this is precisely what the pioneers did to recover. They prayed to God, using the Lord's Prayer in Matthew, Chapter 6. They sought God first, following the teachings in Matthew 6:33. They accepted the necessity for doing the will of God, as mandated in Matthew 6:10 and Matthew 7:23. And there was no more dedicated Bible teacher for Bill Wilson and for other AAs through his books than the Rev. Samuel M. Shoemaker, Jr., rector of Calvary Episcopal Church in New York. You can find Shoemaker language in the Twelve Steps of A.A. You can find Shoemaker language in A.A.'s Big Book. You can hear it in the meetings. Yet few know that it came from Shoemaker. This book shows the specific items A.A. borrowed, covers the books and teachings of Sam, describes in detail the relationship between Bill Wilson and Sam, and shows the direct impact that Sam had on A.A. as he spoke at two of its International Conventions, wrote for its Grapevine, and kept in regular touch with Wilson from the very first of Bill's sobriety. It is not without accuracy that Bill called Sam a "co-founder" of A.A. and a wellspring of its ideas. They were close friends and mutually respected each other. To the extent that Bill actually asked Sam Shoemaker to write the Twelve Steps. Thus if you wish to understand A.A. talk, ideas, and literature, you will profit from reading this much-revised book about Sam and A.A. It is the up-dated product of 9 years of extensive research.

Nursing Homes or Mindbody Prescription

Nursing Homes: The Family's Journey

Author: Peter S Silin

Being the family member of someone in a nursing home is part of a difficult and painful process that begins long before a loved one enters the home. Focusing on the psychological, emotional, and social aspects of that process, Nursing Homes: The Family's Journey gives family members important practical advice and emotional support, and it explains the intricacies of care and nursing homes.

Peter S. Silin approaches his subject with compassion and sensitivity, guiding readers through the entire process. Section one helps caregivers cope with difficult decisions and deal with the emotional issues that arise. Section two describes nursing homes and how they work, and it outlines how to choose a home. Section three explains how to prepare for the day a relative moves into a nursing home and suggests ways to help the resident settle in. The fourth section focuses on the family member's role in solving problems, obtaining quality care, and visiting, and it offers advice about how to deal with death and dying. After each chapter are real-life vignettes written by caregivers which help validate and support the reader.

In assisting their loved ones through the transition to life in a nursing home, one of the greatest obstacles families face is a dearth of practical information and sympathetic experience. This book will help fill the gap for family members and their infirm relatives, as well as for social workers and family therapists. It will also be a valuable tool for nursing home administrators and care staff.

Los Angeles Times

Among the most valuable chapters in this book is one titled "Making a Home Better", which includes wonderful advice on how a loved one can influence what goes on inside a nursing home...His inclusion of real-life stories from the families he's encountered over 20 years anchors the book compassionately.

Booknews

...Gives family members practical advice and emotional support when facing the decision to place a relative in a nursing home and presents voices and stories of family caregivers struggling with the nursing home decision. There is material on talking about care with the relative needing care, caring at home versus finding a nursing home, and a detailed overview of a typical day in a nursing home. There is also discussion of guilt, loss, and grief, visiting, and working with other families to improve a nursing home. Includes a list of US state ombudsperson offices, and a questionnaire for assessing a nursing home. Silin is a geriatric social worker and principal of a geriatric care management company in Canada.

Peter S. Belson

This is a terrific book that will be of immense comfort and benefit to those who read it. Families dealing with aging and chronic illness need concrete information, decision support and clear, empathic guidance to face and accept the storm of emotions that accompany these issues. Peter Silin's book does all of that, in a calm, forthright and sometimes humorous manner that goes directly to the often unspoken pain that complicates the process of choice. The inclusion of the stories from support group members is invaluable. I enthusiastically recommend this work to clients and fellow care management professionals.

William H. Thomas

These true stories speak with power and passion.

Lilian Wells

The information in Nursing Homes is of excellent quality. The vignettes are a powerful supplement to each section. Silin's style is informal and easy to read but based on sound theoretical principles, research, and 'best practices' in gerontology.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Myra A Aud, PhD, RN (University of Missouri-Columbia)
Description: This book speaks directly to families who are faced with decisions about nursing home placement. It discusses a variety of issues related to nursing home placement decisions and supplements that discussion with narratives from family caregivers of their experiences.
Purpose: The purpose is to assist family caregivers who are faced with the prospect of nursing home placement for an elderly relative. The book includes information about choosing a nursing home, making the transition into the nursing home, and assuring quality care after admission. This information is needed by family caregivers who are often simply told by healthcare providers to "go and find a nursing home." The author has provided important information to help them in that search and also to cope with the feelings surrounding the placement of a relative in a nursing home.
Audience: Throughout the book, the author is speaking directly to family members: spouses, sons, daughters. Although this book is written especially for families, it would be valuable reading for geriatric social workers, clergy, nurses, and long-term care administrators. The author's experience as a geriatric social worker establishes his credibility. In the preface he describes listening to family members in a support group setting and at other times as they described their experiences placing relatives in nursing homes.
Features: The book includes topics related to making decisions about care for an elderly relative, choosing a nursing home, making the actual transition into the nursing home, and assuring quality care after admission. In addition to providing factual information about long-term care and the process of decision making, the author addresses the feelings that family members experience and how to cope with those feelings. The attention to the feelings of the family members, and the author's concern for the family members, are especially valuable features of this book. The size of the potential audience is increased by the author's inclusion of information about both the Canadian and U.S. long-term care systems. The appendixes include questionnaires to assist families in evaluating different nursing homes.
Assessment: I was very impressed with the insertion of narratives from family members between the chapters. Hearing directly of the experiences of family caregivers reinforces the material and makes the chapter's information more immediate and less didactic. The content of the chapters is excellent and should be useful for families. Reading it I could identify advice that I have shared with families struggling with decisions about nursing home placement. Although I have read other books about nursing home placement and nursing home quality, this book stands out for its focus on the feelings of the families at this stressful time.

    What People Are Saying

    Howard Stern
"My life before Dr. Sarno was filled with excruciating back and shoulder pain. For twenty years I also suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder and thought my back pain was due to my height or some sort of spine problem and that my OCD was a chemical imbalance and only treatable with medication. But all my thoughts were wrong. Imagine the miracle in my life when in a matter of weeks my back pain disappeared. Imagine my shock when I applied Dr. Sarno's principles and never suffered a single symptom again. Quite simply -- I owe Dr. Sarno a lot."

    John Stossel
"For fifteen years, my life revolved around my back. I took time off from work, conducted meetings lying on the floor, and slept with ice bags. Could this be psychogenic? I had considered Dr. Sarno's idea preposterous, but ten years ago I was talked into seeing him. I haven't had back problems since. If Dr. Sarno is right about other psychogenic pain, America is wasting billions of dollars. What a tragedy." -- Correspondent, 20/20

The Fashion System or Chronic Pain and the Family

The Fashion System

Author: Roland Barthes

In his consideration of the language of the fashion magazine--the structural analysis of descriptions of women's clothing by writers about fashion--Barthes gives us a brief history of semiology. At the same time, he identifies economics as the underlying reason for the luxuriant prose of the fashion magazine: "Calculating, industrial society is obliged to form consumers who don't calculate; if clothing's producers and consumers had the same consciousness, clothing would be bought (and produced) only at the very slow rate of its dilapidation."

Chronic Pain and the Family: A New Guide (Family Health Guides Series)

Author: Julie K Silver

Chronic pain is the leading cause of disability in the United States, affecting as many as 48 million people in this country alone. It can demoralize and depress both patient and family, especially when there is no effective pain control and no hope for relief. Improperly managed, chronic pain can lead to substance abuse (usually painkillers) and to acute psychological and emotional distress. Pain begets stress and stress begets pain in a wretched downward spiral.

Silver reviews the causes and characteristics of chronic pain and explores its impact on individual family relationships and on the extended family, covering such issues as employment, parenting, childbearing and inheritance, and emotional health. Silver treats aspects of chronic pain not covered in a typical office visit: how men and women differ in their experience of chronic pain, the effect of chronic pain on a toddler's behavior or an older child's performance in school, the risks of dependence on and addiction to pain medications, and practical ways for relatives beyond the immediate family circle to offer help and support to the person in pain.

The Patient from Hell or The Great Physicians Rx for Depression and Anxiety

The Patient from Hell: How I Worked with My Doctors to Get the Best of Modern Medicine and How You Can Too

Author: Stephen Schneider

Threatened with a rare and life-threatening cancer, a scientist works with his doctors to make decisions in the face of uncertainty

Journal of the American Medical Association

"Compelling...offers a number of positive and useful messages for patients enduring chemotherapy, radiation, and other cancer treatment."

MacLean's

"An emotional account of the pain and fear [Schneider] felt while he was ill."

Publishers Weekly

Schneider, a climate scientist at Stanford and a MacArthur fellow, brought skills rooted in the uncertainty of his own field to bear on the treatments he received for mantle cell lymphoma, a rare condition for which treatments were relatively new. With his wife, Terry, also a scientist, he learned as much as possible about the protocol he had been assigned and read up on his oncologist, a leader in this type of cancer, Dr. Sandra Horning. Schneider gives a detailed account of the painful and otherwise unpleasant side effects of the chemotherapy, radiation and bone-marrow transplant he endured in a determined effort to arrest the disease. From the beginning, the author researched probabilities and outcomes and sought to modify decisions made by his physicians. Most importantly, after some resistance, Dr. Horning agreed to use Rituxan for Schneider as maintenance therapy to prolong his remission. Although the author's scientific language can be daunting, patients will relate to his arguments for the importance of patient advocates, individualization of treatments and the negative role bottom-line accounting plays in medical judgments made by HMOs. The First Year Parkinsons Disease or Endometriosis

The First Year Parkinson's Disease: The Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed

Author: Jackie Hunt Christensen

Parkinson's disease—a chronic disorder that causes a progressive loss of nerve cell function in the part of the brain that controls muscle movement—is an incurable neurological condition with debilitating symptoms. Over 1.5 million Americans are affected, and the numbers continue to grow. From the first moment of her Parkinson's diagnosis, author Jackie Christensen took charge and educated herself on every aspect of her condition. Now, as a "patient-expert," she guides those newly diagnosed step by step through their first year with Parkinson's. She provides crucial information about the nature of the disease, treatment options, diet, exercise, charts and tables, social concerns, emotional issues, networking with others, and much more. The First Year—Parkinson's Disease will be an invaluable guide for all those who want to be an informed, active participant in the management of their condition.

Library Journal

These two volumes continue the "First Year" series written by the diagnosed for the newly diagnosed (see also Type 2 Diabetes, Hepatitis C, and Fibroids). Chapters are chronologically arranged: days one through seven after the diagnosis, the remaining weeks of the first month, then monthly for the remainder of the year. Each chapter contains a learning section (factual aspects of diagnosis, treatment, nutrition, support, and clinical trials) and a living section (practical tips and anecdotes on family/social issues, diagnosis and treatment, and financial matters). Both books are written accessibly and compassionately and stress patient empowerment. Although their content is medically sound and fairly comprehensive, it is more shallow than introductive in that it glosses over topics without giving much indication of their complexity or depth. For instance, in Prostate Cancer, there is no mention of how and why biopsies are not 100 percent accurate. While both books have a table of contents and plans for an index, topics are often scattered (e.g., "PSA testing" in Prostate Cancer and "caregivers" in Parkinson's Disease). Unfortunately, too, glossary definitions tend toward the technical, with terms like genetic transmission and biochemical changes, and resource sections lack effective organization and key governmental resources (e.g., MedlinePlus). These are marginal purchases for consumer health collections, especially those that have Nutan Sharma and Elaine Richman's Parkinson's Disease and the Family: A New Guide and American Cancer Society's Complete Guide to Prostate Cancer, edited by David G. Bostwick and others. (Indexes, illustrations, and diagrams not seen.)-Janice Flahiff, Medical Univ. Lib. of Ohio, Toledo Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

The Art of Getting Well or Managing Chronic Illness

The Art of Getting Well: Maximizing Health and Well-Being When You Have a Chronic Illness

Author: David Spero

A majority of chronic illnesses have no medical cure. The best therapy, asserts the author, is self-care. This comprehensive guide suggests healthy behaviors and holistic approaches while acknowledging the barriers people face in applying them.

Publishers Weekly

Spero, a practicing nurse who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis over a decade ago, presents an accessible, practical and encouraging self-care manual for the chronically ill. Spero's five-step plan for assisting with physical recovery slowing down, making positive changes, maintaining a support network, learning to value one's body and taking some responsibility for improvement may well be useful for the healthy and ill alike. Each step is presented in detail and is interwoven with both the author's personal experiences and those of other patients. Spero describes how a 53-year-old woman diagnosed with severe hypertension made two job changes in order to find work that not only was less stressful, but also gave her greater satisfaction. He provides many examples of the benefits of building a wide support network: relying on several rather than one "helper" actually gave patients more independence. Of particular interest is the list of "twenty-four reasons to live," which suggests creative ideas to lift depression, such as getting a pet, spending more time in nature and developing new hobbies. The author is careful to stress the importance of health professionals but is convinced that caring for oneself emotionally enhances medical treatment. Managing Chronic Illness: Using the Four-Phase Treatment Approach: A Mental Health Professional's Guide to Helping Chronically Ill People

Author: Patricia A Fennell

A pioneering book to help maximize the quality of life for chronically ill patients Written by a leading authority on chronic illness treatment and management, Managing Chronic Illness Using the Four-Phase Treatment Approach provides evidence-based practice guidelines for clinicians to help their clients with debilitating health problems embrace a new "normal," understand the cyclical nature of their illness, and function at the highest level possible.
Patricia Fennell's groundbreaking model for understanding chronic illness identifies and describes four broad phases experienced by the chronically ill: crisis, stabilization, resolution, and integration. Using a broad array of case histories, Fennell vividly illustrates what clients need at each phase and how to assess and respond to them compassionately. Fennell also suggests how clinicians may best use their own changing experiences in their work to help clients transition through the four phases.
The goal of the "Four-Phase Model" is to maximize a client's quality of life without offering false hope for a cure, making it an effective treatment strategy for diverse client populations, including people with physiological diseases; patients whose lives are being prolonged by modern medicine; and people who suffer from addiction, post-traumatic stress syndrome, intractable pain, and post-rape and abuse conditions.
Complete with detailed treatment protocols for documenting a client's symptoms and quality of life at each phase, Managing Chronic Illness Using the Four-Phase Treatment Approach is a highly practical book for everyone working with chronically ill clients.

Reviewer:Edouard Trabulsi, MS(Thomas Jefferson University Jefferson Medical College)
Description:The 20 chapters in this book, written by prominent minimally invasive surgeons from the U.S. and Europe, highlight the field of robotic surgery in urologic practice.
Purpose:The authors wish to expose readers to the breadth of experience of robotic surgery for urologic procedures, and to explain the history and development of the currently available technologies. The chapters explain technical aspects of robotic urologic procedures, with significant graphics, including drawings and operative photographs. The authors also highlight the published literature demonstrating functional results as well as operative parameters and complications of the various procedures. The book appears all-inclusive, covering all aspects of this exploding field, as well as projected future developments.
Audience:Novice robotic surgeons, as well as trainees in medical school, their residencies, and fellowships are the intended audience. The book describes the steps necessary to start a successful program, including the importance of a dedicated surgical team, and devotes several chapters to specific, technical operating room nuances to help novices succeed.
Features:The majority of the book focuses on robotic prostatectomy, accounting for 12 of the 20 chapters. This is not surprising, considering robotic prostatectomy is the most commonly performed robotic procedure in urology. The remaining chapters cover the history of robotics in urology, the use of robotics in surgical procedures of the kidney and bladder, and pediatric robotic surgery andnonurologic robotic surgery. The final chapter highlights some of the financial considerations of this expensive technology. The chapters on the whole are well written and comprehensive, and the illustrations are a strong point, with excellent color pictures. There is considerable overlap among the chapters, however, particularly with the robotic prostate chapter. Additionally, the quality of the chapters is uneven, with some very brief, and others redundant.
Assessment:The book works well as a snapshot of the available technology and its current and future applicability to the practice of urology. The field of robotic surgery is exploding, and this book captures the growth curve we are witnessing before our eyes.
